Mandeoksan is a mountain in Gangjin county, Jeollanam-do. It rises 409 meters.
Baekryeonsa and Dasan Chodang are both on the mountain, and are connected to one another by hiking trails. A map (in Korean) is available here. It takes between ten and fifteen minutes to hike between Baengnyeonsa and Dasan Chodang. Other places of interest include Dasan's Relic Exhibition Hall, Yongmunsa and Okryeonsa temples, and the Camellia Forest of Baengnyeonsa Temple, a national natural treasure.
[edit] Hiking
Several trails cover the mountain, as seen here. There are two main options to reach the peak, Gitdaebong (깃대봉). If walking the trail between Dasan Chodang and Baengnyeonsa, there will be a marker at the half-way point that shows the way up a peak. This is a fairly challenging route, as it first climbs a steep and moderately tricky peak next to Gitdaebong, before winding its way across and up to the top. The second and easier trail begins to the right of Baengnyeonsa temple. If facing the temple, walk to the right to the beginning of the temple's driveway. The trail begins here and is marked by a sign and by colored ribbons left by previous hikers. The temples Yongmunsa and Okryeonsa are also reachable, as seen on the map, but are some distance from the major tourist attractions.
[edit] Getting There
Take a bus from the Gangjin terminal in Gangjin-eup to Mandeok-ri. Buses from Gangjin terminal go to Baekryeonsa and Dasan Chodang as well. If taking a bus it is advised to tell the bus driver where you are going, as there are no stops directly at either Baengnyeonsa or Dasan Chodang. Also, make sure to learn what time a bus will return to take you back to Gangjin, as the time tables written at the small bus stops are inaccurate. It may be necessary to hail a taxi back to Gangjin-eup.
