Muju (무주군, , flourishing.crimson.county) is a county in Jeollabuk-do. The population as of 2004 was 26,272, including:

  • 26,183 Koreans and
  • 89 non-Koreans.

Population has continued to drop over a number of years: in 1981 the county had 56,038 residents.

Muju is divided geographically into two regions by the Sobaek Mountains. Muju is a popular destination for winter recreation.

Muju was the host city of the 1997 Winter Universiade.

Muju was considered by South Korean Olympic Committee to compete for the right to host 2014 Winter Olympics. However, the International Ski Federation announced that Muju will not be able to host such an event, and Pyeongchang entered the competition as the South Korean candidate city for 2014.

To the west are the counties of Jinan and Jangsu, to the north are the counties of Geumsan and Yeongdong in the provinces of Chungcheongnam-do and Chungcheongbuk-do respectively, to the east is the city of Gimcheon an the province of Gyeongsangbuk-do and the county of Geochang in the province of Gyeongsangnam-do.

Mountains in or near the county include Minjujisan (민주지산, 1,242m), Daedeoksan (대덕산, 1,290m), Dumusan (두문산, 1,051m) and Deogyusan (덕유산, 1,614m).

The average yearly temperature is 12℃, and the county receives a yearly average of 1,300 mm of precipitation.

Muju is the site of a well-known five-day market, the Firefly Market.
