Namak-ri is located in Samhyang-myeon, Muan county, Jeollanam-do. Namak is currently the capital of Jeollanam-do, a spot occupied by Gwangju until 2005.
Namak New Town, or Namak New City (남악신도시) is an urban planning initiative designed to expand the village of Namak. Though Namak has been the location of the Jeollanam-do Provincial Office, the present size of the village does not reflect this position. As of 2001, Samhyang has a population of just under 9,000 [1], but the new plans are aiming for around 150,000 [2].
The initiative calls for the expansion of industrial, commercial, cultural, and residentail facilities. Two big components of the plan are the construction of a new Provincial Office and the completion of Muan International Airport. The final phase of the plan will finish in 2019.
