Namak New Town

Namak New Town, or Namak New City (남악신도시) is an urban planning initiative designed to expand the village of Namak, in Samhyang-myeon, Muan county, Jeollanam-do. Since 2005, Namak has been the location of the Jeollanam-do Provincial Office, although the present size of the village does not reflect this position. As of 2001, Samhyang has a population of just under 9,000 [1], but the new plans are aiming for around 150,000 [2].

The plan was thought-up in the 1990s and first implemented in 2000. Namak was selected because of its proximity to transportation and industry in the region [3]. The plan will develop industry, information technology, cultural, recreational, and residential areas. Chief components of the initiative are the rebuilding of the Provincial Office and the completion of Muan International Airport. It is also hoped that the development will adhere to a "Fine View" campaign, which would limit the size of new buildings [4], as well as introduce "three zeroes"---zero electric poles, zero walls, and zero outside sign boards [5]. Part of its goal is to complement the nearby city of Mokpo by absorbing residents and replacing the Mokpo Airport with the yet-unfinished Mokpo International Airport [6]. The plan is scheduled to be finished in 2019.
