Namdaemun

Namdaemun (남대문, ) is the name of one of the three great gates of Seoul, along with Seodaemun and Dongdaemun. The gate is 600 years old and has been designated National Treasure number 1. In February 2008 the gate was set on fire by a disgruntled Man and nearly all of the wooden portion of the structure was destroyed. Reconstruction efforts are expected to last up to three years.

"Namdaemun" is also the name generally used for the large market near the gate. For information on the market area itself, see Namdaemun Market.

[edit] Getting there

Take the light blue subway line 4 to Hoehyeon Station, and then use exit 5 or 6.

[edit] History

During the period of occupation the name of the gate was pronounced in Japanese as Nandaimon and Nandaimon Station was also located there.
