The county of Namhae is located on the fourth-largest island in the country, and it is made up of 68 islands. It is the island with the largest number of mountains in the country, and there are a large number of narrow streams. Due to the steep slopes on the island agriculture is usually done with terraced farming.
Most of the citizens of the island live on the largest island, Namhae-do, as well as Changseon-do. On the inhabited islands of Jo-do, Ho-do and No-do are 69 households with a total of 189 people. The 65 other islands are uninhabited. In June 1973 a bridge to the mainland was constructed, and in 1980 another was constructed to join the two islands together.
Some of the mountains on the island include Mang'unsan (망운산, 786m), Geumsan (금산, 701m), and Songdeungsan (송등산, 617m).
