Paro Lake (파로호, 破虜湖) is a lake in Hwacheon County, Gangwon-do. It was formed in 1944 from the creation of a dam on the Bukhan River, has a total surface area of 38.88㎢ and one billion tonnes of water. The dam itself is 77.5 metres in height. The hanja in the name of the lake means "broken soldiers" and comes from the large number of North Korean and Chinese troops whose bodies were cast into the lake after death. The name was given by the president at the time, Seungman Ryee.
