Public markets in Chuncheon

Several public markets (시장) are held in Chuncheon:

  • Dongbu Shijang is on the east side of town about 1 km west of KNU's north entrance. Its a rather small market.
  • Jungang Shijang is the largest on in Chuncheon. This one is located off the south side of Jungangno and at the west end of Myeongdong Street. In the north part of the market there are many clothing shops. The south end has (in season) a small gaegogi section. In the south and west parts are a number of small restaurants. In the middle one can find produce, ddeok, kitchenware, meat and fish. The market started operation in 1961 and now has around 300 shops. The majority of buses in Chuncheon provide access to this market.
  • Morning market is located on the far east side of Chuncheon, north of the GS Supermarket. It extends along one side of the street at the top of a hill. Not a huge place but there's lots of produce to buy.
  • Nambu Shijang can be found on maps and on local bus route maps, but there's no market there any more. The interior of the market building is a place dealing in large stainless-steel vats. Pungmul market has taken its place.
  • Pungmul Shijang is a five-day market open on days ending in 2 and 7. Other days there are a few places open here. Its north end is on the west side of Namburo and it angles off several blocks to the south from there, with some offshoots in narrow lanes. There are a few small restaurants in the market, and a number of them in the blocks to the south. This has the biggest variety of foodstuffs in Chuncheon on market day, even more so than Jungang. Lots of tasty Korean snacks for sale too.
  • Yulmun-ni Shijang is a five-day market held on days ending in days ending in 4 and 9. It is located in Sinbuk-eup, lying along one lane heading off the main road just east of the myeon office. It continues for several blocks and has a good selection of produce and other foods. This town is in a big grape-growing area, and they are abundant and cheaper here in season. One can also find several stalls with snack items such as patbingsu, pancakes of various kinds, ice cream and sundae. There are a number of buses passing by here including the No. 11 from Soyang Dam to Chuncheon's city center, south and east side.
