Mungyeong restaurants
(Redirected from Restaurants in Mungyeong)

A list of some of the restaurants one can find in the city of Mungyeong in Gyeongsangbuk-do.

[edit] Jeomchon (점촌):

There are lots of places selling chicken, pizza and kimbap. One concentration of them is on the street the daily market is on - but north from there. There's a gelateria up there, some good Gimbap places, and sometimes food stands selling sugar-filled pancakes, fish-shaped cookies, and such.

  • Baskin-Robbins This ice cream place is the only multinational chain eating place in Mungyeong-shi. It's right on the southeast corner of the main intersection in Jeomchon.
  • Bbyeo-haejanggukk Jeonmun (054) 555-0106. The broth is flavorful and the meat is tender and succulent, comes off the bones with ease. 5,000 won for a bowl of Bbyeo-haejangguk w/ rice and kimchi. The also serve Gamjatang and gongguksa. FINDING IT: From Mungyeong Mojeon Post Office go north to the stoplight. Its to the right, just past the store on the corner.
  • Cheonggihwa (054) 555-8507. Close to the train station. They have an interesting dish, [[Bbeo-haejangguk, which is a soup very much like gamja-tang, except without the kamja (potatoes.) Cost, 4,000 won (1/06)
  • Jongno Boribap (종로보리밥) (054) 5520-5560. This place serves a tasty Boribap with 20 or more dishes, including a piece of fish and a slab of radish boiled in soy sauce, a shredded lettuce salad with chile sauce, a very thick Doenjang-cchigae, and many varieties of kimchi and vegetables. The boribap (rice with barley) comes in a large metal bowl with plenty of room to add one's choice of the other ingredients on the table. The price is only 3500 won. They also have Pindaeddeok for 5,000 won. FINDING IT: One block west and much of a block north of the main post office, on the west side of the street that parallels Jungangno just to the east.
  • Mashil Sundubu (마실순두부) (054) 556-3452. Mojeon-dong 883-1. This place is a block north of the street in front of city hall, and less than a block west of that. All kinds of dubu dishes. Their sundubu is excellent for those who like it mild; the Sundubu-jjigae comes in a wok place on a stove on the table, and is most flavourful (with lots of Gochukaru!) Amazingly inexpensive for the quality you get. Good banchan too.
  • Palmi Chik Nang Myeon (팔미칡냉면) (054) 555-5788. This small place serves basically two items: [[Gulgukbap[[ (oyster-rice soup) and Ssireogi haejangguk (Soup of radish leaves). The oyster soup is wonderful - a rich, flavorful stock with a full-bodied oyster taste. The banchan served with it is all well-made (Even ggakdugi haters will like this mellow succulent radish, and the buchu with chile is most delicious.) At noon a seat may be hard to find (a packed restaurant is rare in Jeomchon - shows how well-liked the food is.) Oh, the name notwithstanding, they don't have Nang myeon on the menu.... FINDING IT: Go south along the street that runs south from the railroad station. It's on the right, after a block or two, facing the side street.
  • Sanhojeong (산호정) (054) 554-3577. Across from the Sanmaru.
  • Sanmaru (산마루) (054) 555-4958. This restaurant's menu is small, but good. There is a jeongshik for 7,000 won and pork bossam for 15,000 (small size - abundantly enough for 2 or 3 people) or 20,000 (large size). The jeongshik includes a plate of beef and lots of good-quality banchan. Bossan is boiled pork which one wraps in leaves (cabbage or other) along with ssamjang or whatever else one wishes. FINDING IT: in Mojeon-dong - Turn off Highway 3 from the south side of the Halla Yuttong, going west. Its up on the right after two or three blocks. Should it be closed another good restaurant, Sanhojang is right across the street.
  • Takibong (054) 556-8055. This restaurant serves a reasonable dak-galbi. It's on the north side of the road that leads to the expressway. Go west just a block and a bit from the city hall. There's another branch of it downtown - a block north on Jungangno from the main intersection, then go east and find it on the right side. Their phone is (054) 553-8055.
  • Tojang Sundaeguk (054) 555-8979. This sundae chain restaurant is located on the road running west from the 5-way intersection in nambu. It's on the south side of the road between the Jeomchon Intercity Bus Terminal and the Mungyeong City Hall. Good sundaeguk with notably less fat and more meat than most sundaeguk places.

[edit] Hogye-myeon:

  • Hyangchun Son Kalguksu (054) 553-6794. It's on the right side of Highway 34, between Hogye and the turnoff to Mungyeong College. Son (made by hand) kalguksu is 3000 won. A tasty boribap with refills on banchan or barley-rice for 3000 won. Boribap starts with a salad base for the barleyrice, then add banchan of your choice - there is nine varieties to select from, less than some places but all tasty and it's a real hearty meal. Moisten the mixture from the bowl of doenjang-cchigae. Also they serve maguksu, beer, soju - and the soft drinks are only 600 won.

[edit] Maseong-myeon

  • Jinnam Maeuntang (054) 552-7777. 128 Shinhyeon-ni, Maseong-myeon, Mungyeong-shi. This is a very large restaurant next to where the tracks of the defunct Mungyeong train line crosses the river. They serve tasty Maeuntang using fish from the river.
