Sajik Park, 사직공원, is located in the Nam-gu section of Gwangju. The park winds up a small hill and is capped by an observatory (pictured) which offers impressive views of downtown Gwangju. There are a few tennis courts in the park, and inside the observatory is a first-floor cafe, a small restaurant, and an internet/board game cafe. There was once a swimming pool, and though some of the structures remain, the area is now used for volleyball and badminton.
Policemen's Memorial
Near the entrance to the park is a tower dedicated to the over 3,100 policemen who died during the Korean War. It can be reached by ascending the staircase behind the police station that is located at the park's entrance. The site, 경찰충혼탑 in Korean, is flanked on either side by tablets listing the names of the dead. A small path to the right of the tower will lead to Sajik Park.
