Samcheok (삼척시) is a city in the southeastern part of Gangwon-do. The population as of 2004 was 74,577, including:

To the north of Samcheok is the city of Donghae, to the west is the county of Jeongseon and the city of Taebaek, to the south is the county of Uljin in Gyeongsangbuk-do, and to the east is the East Sea (Sea of Japan). The city is 46.7 km from east to west, and 59.5 km from north to south.
Notable mountains near the city include Cheongoksan (청옥산, 1,404m), Dutasan (두타산, 1,353m), Jungbongsan (중봉산, 1,284m) and Baekbyeongsan (백병산, 1,259m). to the west of the city is a plateau with an average altitude of over 1,000 metres.
The city is next to the sea with the mountains to the west, blocking the strong winds in the winter and thus giving it an average temperature 3.1 degrees higher than the area on the sea to the west that bears the full brunt of the winter wind. The city has a large amount of precipitation in autumn which is different from most other areas. The average temperature in January is 0℃, the average in August is 24.1℃, and the average yearly temperature is 12.2℃ with around 1,217.4mm of precipitation per year.
