The area around Samdeok Fire Station in downtown Daegu has traditionally been an area that foreigners tend to congregate in. It's renowned for not only its expat hangouts, but also the high turnover rate that they have over the years. It seems like every year, 2-3 new bars would come onto the scene, while 2-3 would close or change ownership/name/theme, etc...Ask any long-term expat in Daegu about Samdeok bar history and you'll hear fond memories of former haunts like Gypsy Rock, Funkaholic, Kiss Me, Rock and Roll, Head Bing Bing, Ping, Mojo's, etc...Although many new foreigner bars and western restaurants tend to come and go like the tide, there is always lots of Korean and foreign activity in the area and usually something for all tastes. A particular hotbed of activity is Rodeo Street(로데오거리), which is the small street that runs north/south through the area and is home to most bars that are frequented by foreigners. If entering downtown from the fire station, take either your first left or first right and you'll find yourself on this street.
Although the "area" is not really defined with notable boundaries, for the purposes of explaining things, it is easiest to say that the area begins south at Withus Bookstore, goes east to Kyungpook University Hospital, north as far as Jin's, and as far west as Daegu Department Store. Though this covers a huge area (almost all of east downtown Daegu) it is helpful to split the core into two sides for now. The eastern Samdeok side and western side that constitutes the Dongseongno, Jungangno, and Academy Cinema districts. Besides, most foreigners already talk about downtown in terms of adjacency to the fire station and Academy Cinema, anyways.
[edit] Directions
- The most direct approach is just getting into a taxi and telling the driver to go to 삼덕소방서 (sahm-deok-soh-bahng-seo).
- Another way would be taking subway line 2 and getting off at Kyungpook University Hospital Station, coming out of Exit 1 and walking straight until the next intersection, where you'd turn right. Walk straight for 5 minutes and you'll eventually see the fire station on the left side of the street along with the unmistakably bright and loud road heading into the heart of downtown.
- If you are coming from the western Dongseongno district, just head east past Burger King and the water fountain and you'll be in the Samdeok Fire Station area after a few blocks.
