Seogwipo (서귀포시, 西歸浦市, west.return.port.city) is a city in Jeju-do, the second largest city on the island. It is located on the south and receives more rain and wind than the capital, though as a result of its location it also has the smallest daily and seasonal divisions in temperature in the country. The total area is 254.57㎢ and the population in 2000 was 85,978 with 334 people per square kilometre. It has a total of twelve dongs. In July 2006 Seogwipo was expanded to include the entire southern half of the island, giving it a population of about 156,000.

In spite of being the second largest city on the island it is much smaller than Jeju City and has a very different atmosphere. The difference between it and Jeju City might be compared to the cities of Nanaimo and Victoria in Canada. The downtown area is composed of a few streets that lead down to the harbour as well as around a hill with the largest church in the city. There are a total of three coffee shops in this area and perhaps a total of five or so in the city. One area in which Seogwipo excels however is in diving, and those who wish to try out or learn diving may do so at any of the dive shops around the harbour.

The city is home to K-League soccer side Jeju United, who play their home matches at the Seogwipo World Cup Stadium.

As the average Korean, Japanese, and Chinese restaurants are in abundance throughout Korea and are easy for foreigners to find, the following restaurants reflect a sampling of restaurants considered to be either popular or are western-friendly choices and other ethnic foods.

[edit] Transportation

[edit] Getting there

Buses go to and from the airport as well as Jeju City. The bus from Jeju City to Seogwipo is called the 시외버스 (shiwae bus, or outside city bus), takes about 45 minutes and costs 3500 won. Be sure that the bus has the "5.16" number on it; this is the highway that uses the most direct route to go between the two cities, first by going towards Hallasan but a little bit east to avoid the slope, and then down all the way to the city. The other bus takes a more scenic route around the entire island before getting to Seogwipo.
