Shiheung is located right next to Seoul, at a distance close enough that it is hard to tell where one ends and the other begins. The subway lines 1 and 4 are the main lines through the city.
Some of the mountains in the area include Masan (마산, 246m), Soraesan (소래산, 299m), and Seongjusan (성주산, 208m).
Being located along the sea, the climate in Shiheung is the same as that in Incheon: the yearly average temperature is 12.1℃, the average in January is -4℃, and the average in August is 25.7℃. In spite of a slight moderating influence from the sea in the west, it is colder than cities on the east coast, and there are no mountains to block the winter wind that comes in from the northwest. The average yearly precipitation is 1,067.2mm.
History
Shiheung became a city in 1989, when its population was at 93,000. Since then it has grown in size by over three times.
