Sinchon Station (railway)

Sinchon Train Station (신촌역) is located on the Gyeonghui Line and is the oldest railway station in Seoul, having been first built in 1920. The railway itself was developed earlier by the Japanese, in preparation of the war against Russia. Over time, the area around the station became known for its red-light district that catered to soldiers. However, for the past 20 years, the area has undergone re-development, which has evolved into a thriving shopping and nightlife area. Just East of the station lies Edae, a popular area for young Koreans to shop and eat in. Also just West is Sinchon, another popular area for students who are attending nearby universities.

In 2006, a new train station was built, which also features a Megabox movie theater, as well as a Migliore shopping complex. The original station is still preserved in its original form, by the entrance to the newer station.
