Starbucks |
Starbucks (스타벅스) is the largest coffee chain in Korea, with a total of 200 locations in all major cities as of April 2007. The first Starbucks in Korea was opened just outside Ehwa Women's University Station, and the 200th store, located near Noksapyeong Station, celebrated its grand opening in April 2007. Starbucks in Korea was started as a partnership between the American Starbucks Corporation and Korea's Shinsegae Department Store Co. Ltd. Shinsegae handles day to day operations in Korea and pays the Starbucks Corporation 5 percent of Korean sales.

[edit] Criticism
Many people find Starbucks prices are high when compared to neighboring Japan. A cup of Starbucks coffee in Korea is par with the price for a cup of coffee at Starbucks in Japan. Conventional wisdom would dictate Korea's lower land and labor costs would mean a cheaper cup of coffee. However, The Economist's Starbucks Index indicates a cup of coffee at Starbucks in Korea is not unduly over valued.
Others find the coffee worth the price, considering local coffee is similarly pricey and generally watery in taste. Koreans have long drunk instant coffee and have not expected a lot from coffee houses in terms of quality. Starbucks usually has a selection of Korean books that come in once a week or so that work as a sort of mini library. Starbucks stores used to have two free newspapers as well (the Jungang Ilbo and the International Herald Tribune), but this was discontinued at the end of 2006.
Many wary travellers appreciate Starbucks for the quality of their bathrooms. Some newer Starbucks are in shared office spaces and share bathroom facilities. The quality of those bathrooms vary. However, many stand-alone Starbucks offer excellent bathroom experiences.
