Storage facilities in Korea are quite varied but most do not cater to foreign teachers or other expats considering the relatively low amount of possessions owned by foreign nationals living in the country for only a few years compared to the average Korean who has been in the country their whole life. Those that know Korean may make a search with keywords such as 이삿짐 (moving luggage) 보관 (safekeeping) / 창고 (warehouse).
If you plan on using storage facilities in Korea for short or long-term use, you have a couple of options available to you.
1. Moving companies, Moving companies often can charge you rates for short and long-term storage needs. They are also useful if you have a lot of stuff, as they will send staff over to move the items. Some moving companies:
Seoul
- Allied
- Shinhan Express. 2695-2000.
- Samyong (삼용물산 - costs 25,000 won per month for 1.5 pyeong (53.38 sq. ft) of storage (1.5 pyeong is the size of a goshiwon room). When paying with cash a year (300,000) must be paid in advance, with the rest refundable upon return. There is some extra cost in getting luggage both picked up as well as packed, but for a person who is willing or able to do this themselves by bringing the luggage all the way to the storage facility in the county of Pocheon.
2. Incheon Airport. Incheon airport has storage facilities for luggage. Short or long-term storage can be had, but can be expensive.
3. Goshiwons. Renting a goshiwon is useful if you don't have furniture to contend with and you are only dealing with boxes and luggage. Although the cheapest of goshiwons start at around 200,000won/mnth, try to find a goshiwon that will discount due the fact that you will not actually be living there.
