Taean (태안군, 泰安郡, quiet.peaceful.county) is a county in Chungcheongnam-do. The population as of 2004 was 63,939, including:

Most of the county borders on the Yellow Sea, except for the east part which leads to the cities of Seosan and Boryeong and the county of Hongseong.
The Gwangju Mountains go through the county.
Along the coasn of the sea there are a total of 11 inhabited, and 107 uninhabited islands.
As the county is technically a peninsula it has a large influence from the sea, but as the sea on the west does not have a great moderating influence Taean is colder in the winter than other cities at the same latitude on the east coast. The average yearly temperature in Taean is 11.8℃, the average in January is -2.7℃, and the average in August is 25.6℃. The average yearly precipitation is 1,115 mm, with half of this falling in between the months of July to September.
