Mountains near the city include Taebaeksan (태백산, 1,567m) and Yeonhwabong (연화봉, 蓮花峰:1,053m) to the south, Sambangsan (삼방산, 三芳山:1,175m) and Baekbyeongsan (백병산, 白屛山:1,259m) to the east, Daedeoksan (대덕산, 大德山:1,307m) to the south, and Hambaeksan (함백산, 咸白山:1,573m) to the west.

In towards the centre of the country from the city is an area composed of a plateau, giving a lower average temperature in the winter and lengthening summer but shortening spring and autumn in the region. The average yearly precipitation is under 1,000 mm which is comparatively low for Korea.

Antti Leppänen on businesses in Taebaek:

"65% of the population in Taebaek are families of small and medium businesskeepers (chungsosanggongin). It is usual that with one huge retail establishment seven marketplaces (chaeraesijang) disappear. 65% are making a living in small shops (kumôngkage) and marketplaces, so what happens when E-mart comes? We are going to make this known at the Shinsegye [owner of E-mart] headquarters." Shinsegye representative: With E-mart, the local economy gets a boost. And in the provinces, apartments are built after a large-scale retailer is established. We have received requests from many local organizations in Taebaek to come and build a store there."
