Tapgol Park

Tapgol Park (탚골 공원) is a large park in Insadong. On March 1st, 1919, a group of 33 Korean Nationalists, including Son Byeong-hui (손병희), presented a declaration of independence from the Japanese colonial rule. It was read aloud in Tapgol Park two days later, sparking the Samil movement.

Today, this park is frequented by large groups of the elderly, and is the starting point of several parades, including the Lotus Lantern Festival parade and the Gay Pride Parade.

The park is named for its 10-tier 12-meter pagoda.
