Applying to have a telephone line installed is easy, as it may be done by calling
your local telephone office at 100 (no prefix) or in writing at the telephone
office business window. You will need to know your Alien Registration Number
and residence address. Installation costs W60,000 and the basic monthly rate is
W5,200. Pay the bills that will be sent to your address every month at the bank.

Contact the telephone office approximately one week before moving. If you
move to another area you will be issued another telephone number. Many people
move in March, causing it to take a while to be issued a new number, so be sure to
contact the telephone office early on. Cancellation of the telephone line can be done
over the telephone, through the mail, or by visiting the local telephone office.

[edit] Public Telephones 공중전화
Public telephones
may be used for local,
long-distance, and
international calls, and
there are three kinds:
coin operated, card
operated, and those
that accept both coins
and telephone cards.
You may use KRW 10,
KRW 50, and KRW 100 coins.
IC cards come in KRW 3,000, KRW 5,000, and KRW 10,000 denominations,
and are sold in neighborhood grocery stores.
Occasionally one will find public telephones that operate using
credit cards.
Mobile phones, depending on frequency sending method, are either the cellular
phone services of SK Telecom (011) and Shinsegi (017), or the PCS phone services
offered by Korea Telecom Freetel (016), Korea Telecom M.com (018), and LG
Telecom (019). Usage fees vary by company, depending on volume and time used.

Go to one of the branch stores of one of the above companies and pay after
filling out an application. The price of the phone itself is separate. Ask at the store
about the price of the phone and use fees.

When calling within the same area, you are connected by simply dialing the
telephone number from your home phone, a public phone, or a mobile phone. Of
course when you wish to call another area within Korea you must dial the area
code (지역번호) and then the person's phone number.

Three companies handle international telephone calls, Korea Telecom (001),
Dacom (002), and Onse (008). Each varies in services offered and cost.

[edit] International Calls Using Dialing Assistance 00799 국제수동 통화
Dial 00799 (with no prefix) if you would like the help of an operator from
Korea Telecom in making an international call. You can do this from anywhere in
the country, and there are a diverse range of services available. First dial 00799,
and an operator will answer. Ask for the desired service, and you will be connected.
- Station to Station Call 번호통화
For calls to anyone at the telephone number that you state to the operator.
- Person to Person Call 지명통화
For calls to an extension number or specific individual as stated by you to
the operator.
When the person receiving the telephone call agrees to pay the charges of
the call, having been asked by the operator.

- It is possible to receive discounts of between 15% and 40% by applying for
discount deals.
- Call early in the morning or late at night, or during the 30% to 50% discount
times on legal holidays.
- Use public telephones, as calls made from regular telephones are charged
telephone tax (전화세).

- Yoboseyo (여보세요) : Use when you want to confirm that someone is on the
line, just as you would use "hello" in English.
- Bakkweo juseyo (바꿔주세요) : The way you ask to speak to the desired person.
- Jamkkanman gidaryeo juseyo (잠깐만 기다려주세요) : How you tell the person on
the other end of the line to wait momentarily.
