memil-guksu

But the translation should come out to 'memil', not 'momil', no?

Oh wait a sec, Starbucks agasshi tells me that there are both 모밀 and 메일. Whoops. mithridates aka 데이빛 13:50, 25 November 2005 (UTC)

How do I change Category names? I want to change Category:Food to Korean Cuisine

Ah, I see. The software doesn't accomodate hard redirects for categories yet: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:CFD#How_to_use_this_page They use this to take care of it right now but it's still a manual process. mithridates aka 데이빛 18:25, 25 November 2005 (UTC)

Eslcafe info links

Do we need to refer links to eslcafe discussions on the content that we're writing? That's a little redundant, no?

Not necessarily. I was looking at the T-money article on Wikipedia though and they have one external link so I wanted two. Maybe there's a better one out there. mithridates aka 데이빛 11:05, 28 November 2005 (UTC)

Ok, well, I just don't want to have any links going to Daves. Wiki.galbijim is supposed to replace the need to go to Daves for info.

Okay, you can take it off then. mithridates aka 데이빛 11:51, 28 November 2005 (UTC)

Editing Mainpage

What's the link to edit the mainpage?

Besides the stuff below there's also: http://wiki.galbijim.com/Template:MainPageIntro Anything with a {{}} around it can be accessed by Template: mithridates aka 데이빛 07:53, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

How do edit Food on the mainpage under Living in Korea, to link to the content in the Food Category and not the specific Food article?

Can you help me set up the main page to have pretty categories for 'Living in Korea', 'Working in Korea', 'Travelling in Korea'? In between writing food content, I want to start organizing the front-end and building out the ESL-related articles and make them more visible, as we're less than a day away from Galbijim 2.0 being released with links pointing to the wiki.--Galbijim 06:30, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

Russ is going to do some design touch-ups on the mainpage and logo. Where can I find the skin and template info that he needs to do this?--Galbijim 07:19, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

Okay, Here's info on adjusting the skin: http://wikidev.net/MediaWiki_skin_tweaks It would be best apparently for him to create an account and then work on his own personal skin to get it just the way he wants before exporting it. As for the main page, do you want the categories in the same way I made those two on the left and right yesterday? If so, that's quite easy. mithridates aka 데이빛 11:07, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, that's fine, re: left/right categories. Russ is going to come on here in a few days and do some tweaking.--Galbijim 13:22, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

We need to start building out the look and organization of the directory on mainpage. I've done some small organizing of the Working In Korea, as an example, but not sure of the technicals to do much further. Can you see if you can organize the look of Knowledge Groups, so they start to look like an organized directory?--Galbijim 16:27, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

FYI, here's the beta version of Galbijim 2.0. Still needs some tweaks with the blog and flash images, though.--Galbijim 14:20, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

Ah, there it is. So will the skin on this wiki look pretty much like that or will it just be a bit different? mithridates aka 데이빛 14:42, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

We're going to try to get it close, but it will likely have some different elements. Russ and I had a long talk about what can't be done technically, but he has some other ideas, which will be ironed out after 2.0 goes live.--Galbijim 14:50, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

Contributors

Any early news or feedback on who might be able to convert from the Korean wiki or your forums?

Not certain - I'm waiting for responses from a few people. I did just start telling people yesterday though. mithridates aka 데이빛 08:22, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

"Galbijim says:" template

Can you help me make a template for an advice/tips box that can go on articles. ie., on a job-hunt advice article, I'd like to have a 'Galbijim say: blah-blah', like make sure that they pay your visa run, etc...

It should be able to fit in the margins or in between paragraphs, etc...--Galbijim 12:25, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

Galbijim says:

Mithridates wants to know what you think of this template.

mithridates aka 데이빛 12:33, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

Looks perfect. Cheers!--Galbijim 12:59, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

Wiki sites link

What's the link that you sent before that shows the wikis with the most articles?--Galbijim 15:11, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

Right here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_largest_wikis Once we get over 7500, we'll be on. mithridates aka 데이빛 15:27, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

Now that we are above 700, can you add us to the list of biggest Korean wikis?

No, I looked at that but that's only for those written in Korean. I know we could fit in here though: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wikis mithridates aka 데이빛 15:38, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

Who?

Who is 68.192.161.36? Is that you, but not logged in?

No, not sure who that is. Better welcome him/her. mithridates aka 데이빛 01:49, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

Content resources

KNTO's old site has lots of detailed content that we can edit and use. If you are doing nooks and crannies of parks, rivers, mountains, etc..this will help. Their info on that site is a couple of years old though, so you might need to cross-reference details like hours of operation or costs, with another site.--Galbijim 13:41, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

Okay. I'm going by Naver's encyclopedia though and they have everything so I'll probably be okay. Even the history of these tiny creeks but I don't think we'll need that information just yet. mithridates aka 데이빛 14:13, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

Wiki design

Just to give you a preview of the direction that I want to take the navigation and design, I've advised Russ about the World66 model and I plan on gradually moving towards the direct of something more like New Zealand. The right hand margins on all wiki pages will have the 3-4 most recent jobs that have entered on the job board with RSS feeds for their details, with links directing back to the job board. I don't want to litter the pages with internal promotion, but over time, there will need to be some creative ad placement done, to make people aware of other parts of the site.--Galbijim 04:30, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

Also, one thing that I want to start doing is for us going over to the Korea section of World66 and adding some light content with text links pointing back to the larger resources at Galbijim. On World66's mainpage, they even encourage this and the positive effect that it will have on the other site's search engine rankings. That site currently has a Google PageRank of 6, which is also the same level as Dave's. If Galbijim had hundreds of inbound links coming from PR6 sites, it will tremendously push Galbijim to top rankings, based on how Google's PageRank and search algorithm works. On that same note, however, having many inbound links from low traffic sites with a PR1 google rank, actually hinders the recipient site's ranking. So let's keep this in mind when spreading the Galbijim link around. I'd recommend installing the Google Toolbar on your browser, so you can readily see the other site's PR rank and see if it is PR2 or higher. Anything less, then we should refrain from having an inbound link on that site. If we can get a shitload of links on a high PR site, like Dave's and World66, we need to do that.--Galbijim 05:00, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

If we're going to move the buttons from the left to the right that would be okay, otherwise we should just have job links on the left because of all that unused space over there after the first half-page or so. I'll go check out the World66 site and see what I can do. I suspect cities like Nonsan would be welcome. mithridates aka 데이빛 08:04, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

Ok, well big design enhancements and job list won't appear until later in Dec, as Russ plans to be on vacation until the 21st, so let's try to shape things ourselves, in the fashion of World66, until then.

Netizens

I just read the translation of what you put up on the other wiki about some of the tripe that netizens say. I'm going write a factual, candid, and thorough article this weekend on debunking the K-netizen mindset and motivations, so we can link to it for reference and understanding, whenever foreigners get in a twist over what's being said about them. And I could care less if the netizens try for a DDoS attack after seeing me call it as I see it, as we'll be on the most secure and protected dedicated host on the net, in a few months time.--Galbijim 08:35, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

You mean English teachers = bad? That was actually something Billybrobby put up without signing in so I deleted it but he asked me to restore it and I did so it looks like it was my idea. I thought it was just a netizen that had done it but he selected it as a Korean language sample. mithridates aka 데이빛 08:43, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

I thought that was a verbatim excerpt from something a netizen said. --Galbijim 10:01, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, it was, but Billybrobby decided that it would be more interesting than most other Korean-language content and decided to put it up. That's why I put that note on the top that the content isn't sanctioned by the wiki whatsoever but is only presented as a Korean language resource. I wonder what we'll do if somebody puts something like that up here. Same thing? mithridates aka 데이빛 10:05, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

Korean help

Can you add a wanted article list in Korean? I'd like to have a mention that we need broader descriptions and translated recipes of all the Korean food articles that I'm putting up.--Galbijim 14:55, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

Shwing

I think a re-sizing of the box is needed, moreso than the font. How about removing the logo?--Galbijim 17:05, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

Too be honest, I'd like a larger or bolder font for this. This box is going to be used with some critical FYI stuff, at times, like the job specific stuff, and could risk being skimmed through if it had weak font.--Galbijim 06:07, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

Private school bill

Can you do me a favor? Can you try to find this story in Korean and give me the lowdown on what it's all about? I don't care about the political riot, I only want to know about the specifics of the bill that was passed, if it entails hogwans or private elementary schools or whatever, and basically what appears to be at stake for the education industry? Thanks a lot.--Galbijim 15:44, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

Well...I just checked and there was a lot of jargon about what authority is going to what committee and other things that I have no idea about but in summary it seems that it's a bill to have stricter limitations on private education. Some people were saying that if the bill passes some schools would have to close and that this bill is a step towards socialism and being more like N. Korea, but I have no idea exactly why. Saw nothing about hagwons in the article but you never know. mithridates aka 데이빛 15:57, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

This is Dami

Helloooooo~ did you see my bangmyunglok in Cyworld?? I went to gangnam, apgujung starbucks. but I couldn't find you. where can I meet you? I want to learn Estonian ASAP. Could you do me a favor? thesedays I learn japanese in Jonggak (Sisajapanese Hakwon) So I go to Seoul every weekday. RRR me , I'll run to starbucks!

STUDY HARD!

Oh, Dami! Give me...one or two more days and I'll probably be better. mithridates aka 데이빛 17:40, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

Galbijim 2.0 is finally up

...after spending the past week ironing out wrinkles. Take a look at the image quadrant. Galbijim 2.5 release is going to have image text beneath every picture, with text links to relevant articles in the wiki. It'll have play/pause/forward/back navigation, so people can go through the slideshow and text, manually or automatically. I think this help drive wiki traffic even further.--Galbijim 00:43, 11 December 2005 (UTC)

Pizza ordering translation

Can you help me translate some pizza ordering expressions and some likely Korean responses that one may expect to hear?--Galbijim 13:51, 11 December 2005 (UTC)

Sure. At Starbucks right now because internet is still down. Not that I mind. mithridates aka 데이빛 00:03, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

Looks good. Thanks. However, can you add a blurb or two about what they say when first asking for the order; asking for the address; asking for the phone number? Better yet, how about just writing a sample AB conversation in Korean over how a typical conversation might go, starting from when they answer the phone to hanging up. Then I'll write the romanization, next to it.--Galbijim 04:10, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

Okay, but I'll have to check a bit about that. I don't know the exact wording they use in English, Korean or any other language. I could make a good guess but pizza places have their own stock phrases too. Cough cough cough mithridates aka 데이빛 04:13, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

Restaurant directions translation

I'm translating some Korean content from ethnic restaurants in Korea, however, I don't want to risk buggering up the translation for giving directions to these places. Can you give a look to my recent Ethnic restaurants that I've added and properly translate their directions? Thx--Galbijim 06:29, 13 December 2005 (UTC)

I'd like to add the Ethnic restaurants category to knowledge groups on main, but it's not taking. Can you help out? Also, can you add more complete articles or categories to the knowledge groups, so it gives a better impression about how much stuff we have on here?--Galbijim 15:41, 13 December 2005 (UTC)

Lawyer tables

Can you help me with making a table template for the Lawyers article? I need rows for Address:, Telephone:, Fax:, Email:, Website:, Areas of Practice:, Spoken Languages:. Thx a lot--Galbijim 15:06, 19 December 2005 (UTC)

Xmas party

Caveman and I really want you to come to our work's xmas party tomorrow night in Apgujeong. There's going to be hundreds going and people bringing guests. Starts around 7. Please advise.--Galbijim 06:37, 21 December 2005 (UTC)

Okay, that sounds good. Thursday is the best day of the week. The only way I'll skip out is if...I'll tell you through email. mithridates aka 데이빛 06:41, 21 December 2005 (UTC)
