Waegwan Abbey

Waegwan Abbey

In 2001 there were 140 Benedictine monks living at the Waegwan abbey. Eight of the monks came to live at St. Pauls Abbey in New Jersey that year, to restore a place which was scheduled to close down from lack of members. St. Pauls became a dependent priory of the Waegwan abbey.

Waegwan Abbey was a successor to the original Seoul Abbey (1909-1927), and Tokwon Abbey (1927-1949) (Closed down by the North Koreans).

Waegwan Abbey, the Abbey of Sts. Placidus and Maurus, has been in Waegwan since 1952.
