The White Lotus Festival takes place every August in Muan county, Jeollanam-do. The festival is held at Hoesan White Lotus Pond, on almost 82 acres, or 330,000 square meters, of land. The Hoesan White Lotus Pond is 3 kilometers in circumference, and the naturally-growing lotus flowers were reportedly started by a single farmer, who planted 12 lotus roots during the colonial period in the early 20th century [1].
