[edit] Restaurants

As the average Korean, Japanese, and Chinese restaurants are in abundance throughout Korea and are easy for foreigners to find, the following restaurants reflect a sampling of restaurants considered to be either popular or are western-friendly choices and other ethnic foods.

[edit] Bars

[edit] Shopping

  • "Home Plus" the largest grocery and department store located down the street from the train station. Has 3 levels for all shopping needs.
  • Home Mart on the street going west from the train station.
  • Dream Mart is a smaller one just south of the Yeongju Intercity Bus Terminal.
  • NongHyup has a Hanaro Mart accessable from the JungAng Shiktang and another one just a bit east of that.

[edit] Public markets

Yeongju may have more public market area for the town size that anywhere in Korea. South Yeongju has a pretty good size one; it's just north of the train station. In Yeongju's north section there are a series of market areas stringing completely across town. The Yeongju gongseol shijang is on the east side under roofs. Recently several new rest rooms have replaced the old portapotty arrangements they had not long ago. West from here the market snakes out along narrow streets until it meets up with the JungAng Shijang. This runs on for several more blocks west.

[edit] Sports and Recreation

[edit] Taekwondo

A taekwondo gym (상무) which holds classes in English for foreigners can be found at the traffic lights next to the citizen's stadium. The gym is named after Yonsei University, where the master attended school.

[edit] Volunteer Opportunities

In 2009, local native English teachers formed a foreigner-friendly volunteer organization, H.A.P.P.Y. (Helping and Promoting Progress in Yeongju), affiliated with the Yeongju Volunteer Center. Members often engage in various activities with other volunteer organizations.

[edit] Accomodation

There are many motels just west of the train station. Also an area of Yeoinsuks there. Other accomodations are scattered through the north part of town, with concentrations south of the Gongseol market and west of the JungAng shijang.

[edit] Transportation

[edit] Bus

There are two bus terminals in Yeongju, both on the same road but on the opposite end of the downtown area.

  • Local bus terminal - small smoky waiting room with a schedule on the wall. Local city buses go to places such as Buseoksa, Punggi, Huibangsa and Sosu-seowon. The #27 bus goes to Buseoksa via Punggi and Sosu-seowon, while the #55 goes there via Jinu. The #53 goes to Sunheung. The #33 goes to Bongwha.
  • The Yeongju Intercity Bus Terminal is located way at the northwest corner of the urban area. It's a small overcrowded building, considering the number of buses that use it and the number of passengers in and out. No lockers for storage. The side entrance to the station lead directly between the urinals in the men's rest room. People of various genders wander through there sometimes in entering the building. There are several places to get snack in the terminal, and the Dream Mart is just to the south. Buses from here go to Seoul, Andong, Sangju, Daegu, and many other places. Buses coming and going from southern locations stop at a main intersection in the south part of Yeongju to pick up or discharge passengers. This stop is about a kilometer from the train station.
    • Address: 497 Yeongju 3-dong, Yeongju
    • Telephone: (054) 631-5844
