Yeonhwa-do (연화도, 蓮花島, lotus.flower.island) is a small island to the south of and technically a part of the city of Tongyeong in the province of Gyeongsangnam-do. It has a total area of 3.41㎢, 12.5 km of shoreline, and a population of 274 in 1999. The highest part of the island is 212m and is called Yeonhwa-bong (연화봉). The island used to be part of the county of Goseong but was incorporated into Tongyeong in 1914, then a county.
There are a number of ferries going both to and from the city of Tongyeong to the island every day. The island turns up a larger number of images and search hits than other islands in the area of the same size, and thus seems to be a relatively more popular tourist destination. This is likely due to its Buddhist nature - the name itself comes from the legend of a priest that became enlightened in the area and there is a Buddhist theme park (see image) on the island as well.
