Haebangchon (해방촌) is the local name for the district of Yongsan 2-ga, which is a neighbourhood in Seoul near Itaewon. Haebangchon is about a 15-20 minutes walk northwest of the main Itaewon commercial area and is nestled in between Yongsan Garrison and Namsan. The area is arguably the second most popular place for foreigners to live, after Itaewon. To get there, go to Noksapyeong Station, and go out exit 2. Walk straight for about 10 minutes until you come across a side street that veers left and you'll then begin to see a lot of large Korean clay pots on the left side. Walking further from this point will lead you to the heart of Haebangchon. Conversely, if you were to walk in the same direction on the opposite side of the main street from the subway station and take the road veering right, you'll find yourself on Gyeongridan, which is also an area that has begun to experience its own international boom resulting in some fine Gyeongridan restaurants and bars.
Recently, the area has become more popular due to the establishment of the Haebangchon Music Festival. Additionally, the Haebangchon and Gyeongridan areas are home to their own Spring Beer Festival, every April.
Restaurants and Bars
The area is famed for its vibrant food and nightlife alternative to the nearby bustling Itaewon scene. While not as plentiful in options as Itaewon restaurants and bars, the Haebangchon restaurants and bar scene has a loyal fan base that keeps both Koreans and foreigners coming back.
